Museum Artwork

Óbidos Museums and Galleries Network goes to Freixianda

What is Saint Martin of Tours doing in a fish market? The sculpture, by the artist José Aurélio, was the work selected by the Rede de Museus e Galerias de Óbidos to temporarily be part of the Freixianda community. The statue alludes to the moment when Saint Martin of Tours donated his cloak to a beggar who was standing in the rain and the miraculous appearance of the sun after this generous gesture.

The artwork alluding to Saint Martin of Tours intends to make known the invocative saint of the Chapel name after him, through a contemporary sculpture by master José Aurélio. This Chapel, classified as a National Monument in Óbidos, is one of the oldest testimonies of the Medieval Period. The selected artwork relates the ancient to the contemporary, reflecting the identity of the region in rustic and medieval components, and its reinvention. The artwork intends to submerge different synergies that allow us to establish bonds and empathy with the piece of art itself, either by the role of the artist who interpreted the miracle of Saint Martin of Tours, or by the way this can now be reinterpreted by the community, in difference or similarities.

Municipality of Óbidos

The Rede de Museus e Galerias de Óbidos (Museum and Gallery Network of Óbidos) is composed of several cultural spaces that promote and bring people closer to art, culture and the history of the region. The various artistic nuclei belonging to this network have spaces inside and outside the town walls, namely: Museu Paroquial de Óbidos, Museu Municipal de Óbidos, Museu Abílio de Mattos e Silva, Galeria NovaOgiva, Centro de Design de Interiores (CDI) and Casa Museu – Casa do Arco da Cadeia. All these spaces tell the regional and national history through archaeological artefacts, historical documents, sacred art, design objects and contemporary artwork – among them, a contemporary sculpture of its Patron Saint: Saint Martin of Tours.

The relationship between the sun and its impact on community life and the rural environment led participants from the village of Freixianda to use locally grown maize kernels and shirts to shape their collective work: The Union Sun is For Everyone.

Testimonials

(…) it ended up in the museum and I think it was appreciated by everyone and I like that. It was appreciated. I really enjoyed it. (…) The unity’s sun is for everyone. Whatever there is in the world is for everyone. It’s not just for you or someone else. If it is for everyone, no distinction is made. The sun is for everyone.

O isolamento das populações é muito grande agravando-se ainda mais com a pandemia, mas a persistência dos artistas foi fundamental para o convívio social, resultando num abrir os seus corações e mostrar o que lá estava escondido.
