Renda de Bilros de Peniche Museum

Municipality of Peniche

Located in the historic center of Peniche, “Museu da Renda de Bilros” (Bobbin Lace Museum) is a cultural and educational space. Integrated in the Rede Museológica do Concelho de Peniche (Museum Network of Peniche), this museum, inaugurated in 2016, is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of this art with four centuries of history. In a land facing the sea, with men dedicated to fishing, bobbin lace was a complement to the domestic economy in several families, with women learning to lace from an early age, in a knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The collection consists of thousands of pieces of lace and materials associated with the production, as well as contemporary creations, which show the creative possibilities of its application. There is also the “Escola de Renda de Bilros” (Bobbin Lace School),which aims to promote the teaching of this technique and thus perpetuate it in the next generations.

Where there are fishnets, there is lacework – The seas in the hills

The connection that Peniche has with the sea has shaped the identity of its population. The ethnography of Peniche is deeply connected to the traditions, uses and customs associated with fishing and related industries, such as the cultivation of fields and traditional lace. The “Rede Museológica do Concelho de Peniche” (Museum Network of Peniche) took a set of pieces to São Bento that are a testimony of this connection and symbols of its material and immaterial culture: the kneading bowl, the basket and the nets (used for fishing and for unloading fish) and the set of traditional lace from Peniche (where the lace-maker develops her work). It is from people and their knowledge, traditions and objects that the living heritage of the territories are (re)discovered.

Museum-Village Route map

The Museum in the Village Project has transcended geographical boundaries by bringing together museums and villages from 26 different municipalities in Portugal. The map highlights the three participating regions and reveals the route between the museum and the village, where Cultural Heritage acts as a bridge to bring together municipalities, celebrate traditions and enhance territorial cohesion.

I liked it very much, it was the first time we had something so interesting,
that will take us to the world.

The sense of self-esteem of the elderly, seeing their artistic creation displayed in a distant place and, most particularly, in a museum, is something that seemed unattainable to them and it has been all too evident.
